In practicing serves,
engaging in a specific set of movements
–behaviors–,
I thought about how good it feels to hone something; how nice it feels to
do what you’ve been taught–on
the court; in the workplace; at
a home. I thought that serving balls is the same as doing things at work, saying “let me know how I can help” and “my pleasure” as
the minutes, hours, days, months,
and years pass. I thought that
serving balls is the same as memorizing
and imagining, over and over again,
the protocol for dealing with people who are attempting to deface and/or dismantle public property; and felt that, maybe, I shouldn’t look to engage in my job responsibilities in the same way I engage in tennis practice.
If I hone my customer service skills like I’ve honed my tennis playing skills, I may make the same mistakes that cops have made in recent times.
